Responsible Dog Ownership Month

September 1 2016

Did you know that September is Responsible Dog Ownership Month? Fido would probably prefer it if we were celebrating Give Your Dog Cheeseburgers Month, but we double-checked. While responsible dog ownership is important all year long, this is a wonderful opportunity to discuss some key aspects of Fido’s care. In this article, a local Ishpeming, MI vet lists some basic facets of responsible dog ownership.

Diet

Proper nutrition is very important to your dog’s health and well-being! Ask your vet for specific recommendations regarding Fido’s diet, including portion size and, of course, suitable snacks. While treats are fine, and even beneficial, don’t overindulge your pooch with fatty foods. You may find yourself with a furry little butterball on your hands, and extra weight is very bad for your pet’s health!

Training

While you don’t necessarily have to teach your dog how to fetch your slippers or turn the lights on, Fido should know basic obedience commands. The five most important ones are Sit , Stay, H e el, Come, and Lay Down . House training is also very important.

Comfort

Make sure your dog has a good bed, is properly groomed, and has comfy living conditions. Keeping up on those nail trims is also important!

Toys

Fido is quite playful and energetic. Offer your frisky pet lots of fun toys, and play with him every day.

Exercise

Activity is just as good for Man’s Best Friend as it is for us. Fido’s exact exercise needs will depend on his age, weight, health, and breed, but most dogs require at least a daily walk.

Safety

Do some basic puppyproofing, and remove potentially dangerous items, such as small items, toxic chemicals, wires and cords, and plastic bags. Also, keep Fido leashed whenever you take him off your property. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Veterinary Care

Fido should also be microchipped and spayed or neutered. In between appointments, watch for any signs of sickness, and contact your vet immediately if you notice anything amiss. Don’t be afraid to ask for recommendations on your pet’s diet, exercise, grooming, and care. That’s what we’re here for!

Tail Wags

Your dog really wants nothing more than to spend time with you. Pay lots of attention to your loyal pet, and don’t skimp on those belly rubs, either!
