Is your kitty aged seven or older? If so, Fluffy may be a senior … even if she still thinks of herself as a kitten. Your pet’s needs will change a little as she ages, so you may need to make some minor adjustments to her kitty care routine. Here, an Upper Peninsula, MI vet discusses senior cat care.
Beds
Senior cats are expert nappers, and can sleep up to 20 hours a day. Set out lots of beds and comfy napping spots for Fluffy. Older cats sometimes have trouble jumping to their favorite spots, so your kitty may appreciate having pet ramps or stairs. You can also set out footstools or ottoman for her to use as stairs.
Diet
Older cats don’t get as much activity as their younger counterparts, so they can pack on pounds quite easily. While we can’t deny that chubby cats are cute, your pet will be much healthier if she’s close to her ideal weight. Follow your vet’s nutritional instructions, including serving sizes, snacks, and tips on changing over to a senior formula.
Nightlight
Just like people, cats sometimes develop vision issues as they age. Keeping a night light on after dark will help your kitty get around more easily.
Toys/Exercise
Playing is very beneficial for kitties, both mentally and stimulation. Timing those tricky pounce/jump combinations is kind of like the kitty version of doing a crossword puzzle. This will help keep Fluffy’s mind sharp. Plus, running and jumping will keep your furry buddy in good physical shape.
Facilities
Consider getting Fluffy a litterbox with low sides: this will be easier for her to get in and out of than a regular litterbox.
Veterinary Care
Fluffy will need to come in more often as she ages. Staying current with your pet’s exams is very important! Regular exams greatly increase the chances of issues being caught—and therefore treated—early. At home, keep an eye out for signs of illness, such as vomiting, diarrhea, reduced appetite, hiding, and poor grooming. Call your vet immediately if you notice anything amiss.
Cuddles
Older cats often become very cuddly. Pay lots of attention to Fluffy, and make sure that she feels happy, loved, and safe. Enjoy this time in your cat’s life. Senior kitties are adorable!
