Pit Bull Awareness Month

October 15 2021

National Pit Bull Awareness Month is October! Surprisingly, a whopping 20 percent of American dogs are Pit Bulls and Pit Bull mixes. They’re also one of the breeds most often found in shelters. A vet discusses the Pit Bull below.

Basics

The name Pit Bull actually covers several dog breeds: the American Bully, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, American Pit Bull Terrier, American Bulldog, and the American Staffordshire Terrier. However, there is some disagreement here. Some insist that the only true Pit Bull is the American Pit Bull Terrier. (We’ll leave that debate to the AKC.)

History

In the 19th century, Pit Bulls were first bred by combining the Old English Terrier, which is now extinct, and the Old English Bulldog. Those pups became known as ‘bull and terrier’ dogs. Today’s Pit Bulls are descendants of the bull and terrier breeds.

Temperament

As many well know, Pit Bulls have a pretty bad rap. This is sad since many of them are total cuddlebugs, and live for ear scritches and belly rubs. Pit Bull mixes also suffer from that bad PR. Still, it is important to recognize that a strong prey drive exists in some Pits so always be responsible with them. So never let these pups run around off-leash. And make sure that your fencing is secure if you have a yard so your canine companion can’t get out. Proper training is a must as well. We also strongly recommend spay/neuter surgery. Don’t hesitate to ask your vet for specific care tips.

Adoption

Just like with any other dog, adopting a Pit is a lifetime commitment, so think it through carefully before you proceed. You’ll want to consider your family and household. Pits don’t always mix well in a family with cats or other small animals. Some do best as only pets, while others enjoy having other dogs around. Since every dog is unique, a lot will depend on Fido’s history and personality.

Celebrating Awareness Day

There are many ways you can raise awareness about Pit Bulls. Just sharing posts on social media can go a long way towards dispelling harmful stereotypes. You can also support a Pit Bull rescue by donating or volunteering. And, if you have a Pit, treat your pup to a special snack or a new toy.
