Meet The Ukrainian Levkoy

April 1 2022

Like many of you, we have been paying close attention to Ukraine, and are saddened and concerned for its refugees. The conflict is affecting not only people, but also pets. Just like us, Ukrainians have animal companions of all shapes and sizes. However, there is only one Ukrainian cat breed that originated in the region: the Levkoy. A vet takes a look at this unusual kitty below.

History

The Ukrainian Levkoy is a new kitty. Between 2000 and 2011, a breeder named Elena Biriukova, developed them by crossing hairless Donskoys with Scottish Folds. In 2005, Fluffy was officially accepted by the ICFA RUI (Rolandus Union International).

Basics

The first thing to know about Fluffy is that, well, she isn’t exactly fluffy. Levkoys are a hairless breed. They actually have a very distinctive look. Their heads are quite angular, and their ears are sometimes rounded, like the Scottish Fold’s. They sometimes can have curly whiskers and/or long, pointy tails. It’s also worth mentioning that these cats can get pretty big!

Purrsonality

Levkoys are very affectionate and sociable kitties, and they get really attached to their humans. These kitties are in fact so friendly that they can get very depressed and anxious if left alone for even just eight hours. If you get a Levkoy, you may want to get your feline friend a buddy, so she doesn’t get lonely. Aside from that, they are very playful, though rarely aggressive. Provide plenty of toys and playtime!

Care

For the most part, Levkoys have the same basic needs as any other cats. However, because they don’t have fur, they are prone to getting chilly. They often need sweaters when it’s cold, and will appreciate a heated or thermal bed. You’ll also need to use sunscreen on your kitty if she’s allowed outside.

Health

There isn’t much data regarding the Levkoy’s long-term health yet. However, they may be prone to the same conditions their ancestors often get. Donskoys are at high risk of dental issues and dysplasia, while the Scottish Folds may develop kidney issues or cardiomyopathy. Keep up with Fluffy’s veterinary care needs!

Helping

Many wonderful organizations around the world have been stepping up to help the people of Ukraine and their beloved pets. One that is specifically focused on helping Ukraine’s animals is IFAW. To learn more about them, or perhaps make a donation, you can visit their website here.
