7 Ways To Keep Your Pet From Getting Lost

June 15 2022

Did you know that June is Lost Pet Prevention Month? This is an important topic! As many as one out of three pets are lost or stolen at some point during the course of their lives. That’s a pretty sobering statistic. While we hope all of our patients stay safe and sound at home, this is one area where it really pays to take some precautions. Here, a vet lists some ways to keep your beloved pet from getting lost.

Keep Kitty In

While your feline pal may love leaving dusty pawprints on your car or ignoring you when you call her, she’s much safer inside. Keeping Fluffy in won’t only reduce the chances of her getting lost: it also protects her from hazards like cars, weather, and other animals.

GPS Collars

GPS tags are a fairly new technology, and one we are thrilled to see. There are different types of these, so you’ll want to do some research before purchasing one. You’ll want to look at reviews, of course, but it’s also important to check the various options for subscription fees and perks.

Pets that are still intact are also at greater risk of being lost, as they often want to run off looking for love. If your furry pal hasn’t been fixed yet, make that appointment ASAP.

Use Leashes

Even if Fido is really well-trained, it’s always safest to keep him leashed whenever you take him off your property. You never know when something may spook or interest him. Better safe than sorry!

Secure Yard

Fido has quite a taste of adventure, and he is definitely not above sneaking out to go exploring. Make sure that your fencing is secure, so your pup can’t go over, under, or through it. We also recommend getting a self-latching gate.

Train Fido

All dogs should know basic obedience commands, such as Sit, Stay, Come, Heel, and Lay Down. This is very important, as that training can help keep your canine buddy from running off if you drop his leash or if he slips out the door.

Lost pet reports go up significantly at certain times. Two of the biggest dates are July 4th and New Years’ Eve, when the noise of fireworks frightens many of our furry friends, causing them to flee in fear. Thunderstorms can also scare our furry pals. Be extra careful around these times!
