Chicken Broth
If your pup is dehydrated, sick, or just isn’t drinking enough water, give him a bowl of low-sodium chicken broth. Just check the ingredients on the label for MSG, as sodium is often listed this way.
Defeat Potty Problems
Just like people, dogs sometimes become incontinent in their golden years. If Fido is having accidents, don’t punish him. He’s probably already embarrassed, and may become depressed if you scold him. Pour some baking soda onto the stain, let it sit for a while, and then vacuum it up.
Homemade Pill Pouch
Do you have trouble giving your canine buddy pills? You may find it easier with these homemade pill pouches. Mix a tablespoon of milk, a tablespoon of crunchy natural peanut butter, and two tablespoons of flour. Shape them into little pockets, and keep them in the fridge or freezer. Fido may even start looking forward to getting his medications!
Soften Food
If your old friend’s teeth have become sensitive, soften his kibble to make eating easier for him. Add a little water or sodium-free chicken broth to his food, and microwave it for 20-30 seconds.
Ease Arthritis Pain
Arthritis is very common in senior dogs, and can make poor Fido very stiff and sore. To help soothe your pet’s aching bones, put some rice into a sock and tie the end off. Put it into the microwave for one minute, and then gently place it on your pup’s sore spots. Two daily 15-minute sessions will help ease Fido’s pain. You can also use a heating pad on low.
Bonus Hack: Pumpkin
If your dog has tummy trouble, adding canned pureed pumpkin to his food may help firm things up. This works for both diarrhea and constipation. (You’ll still need to take him to the vet, though.)
